Living Classrooms

The Dale Earnhardt Foundation and American Forests, the nation’s oldest conservation organization, have partnered on an exciting environmental and educational project called the “Dale Earnhardt Forest.” As a part of this effort, a number of schools will be selected and designated “Dale Earnhardt Living Classrooms.”

To date, 40 sixth through eighth grade school teachers in North Carolina have been selected to attend a one day workshop and receive GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software and lesson plans designed to help students understand the value of trees to the environment and their community. Each school selected will also receive five historic tree saplings.

The goal is to provide 700 North Carolina schools with environmental education lesson plans and software over the next several years, along with training necessary for teachers to utilize CITYgreen effectively in teaching math and science. Aimed at middle-school level students, CITYgreen has been a tremendously effective tool for teachers in bringing hands on, experience-based environmental education to their students and in teaching the basics of math and science in an applied, practical education package.
